  • Prep time: 15 minutes
  • Cook time:1 hour and 50 minutes

Mom’s Lentil Soup

Ingredients

  • 1 16oz bag of lentils
  • 1 once of olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon of parsley
  • 9 garlic cloves
  • 2 sticks of celery
  • 1 large carrot
  • 1 tablespoon celery salt
  • 1/2 tablespoon fresh ground pepper
  • 15 and 1/2 cups of water
  • 3 skinned tomatoes

Directions

In a large pot place 15 cups of water, than add the salt, pepper, and parsley, then chop up the garlic cloves into four pieces and place them in the pot also, then take the three tomatoes and crush them in your hands over the pot and place them in the pot also,i use the Vantia italian peeled tomatoes in a can but you can use what you like, than cut the celery in half long ways and chop that up into small pieces and place in pot also, than do the same with the carrot, cut in half the long way, than chop into small pieces and place into pot, than place the olive oil in the pot and put the cover to the pot on and turn on flame to medium and let cook for 30 minutes but after 10 minutes you need to leave cover on but not fully, enough to place a wooden spoon in and let sit for the remaining 20 minutes, the last ten minutes you want to mix every five minutes.

As this is getting ready in a medium bowl place a 1/2 cup of water and put the lentils in there also and let sit.

Than after the 30 minutes drain the water from the medium bowl with the lentils, and place the lentils into the pot, mix for about a minute, than place the cover back on again, not all the way, enough to get a wooden spoon in and let cook for 1 hour and 20 minutes, mixing it every 20 minutes.

Then when it is done you will see that some of the water evaporated from the pot, then you know its ready, it should be more like a thick gravy then watery, than let it sit for 10 minutes with the cover off.

And then serve your traditional Mom’s Lentil Soup and enjoy. Did you know the Italian Tradition is if you eat a bowl of lentils before the ball drops for the new years its good luck?

Penne Pasta With Sausage And Mushroom Sauce

If you liked our previous recipe, then you will love the recipe I am sharing with you today. It is a Penner Pasta with sausage and mushroom sauce.

  • Prep time: 20 minutes
  • Cook time: 55 minutes

Penne Pasta With Sausage And Mushroom Sauce

Ingredients

  • 6 sweet sausage
  • 1 and 1/2 ounces of canola oil
  • 1 medium size eggplant
  • 2 large Porta Bella mushrooms
  • 6 medium size vine tomatoes
  • 1 medium-size red onion
  • 1/2 cup of white wine
  • 1/2 tablespoon fresh ground pepper
  • 1/2 tablespoon of kosher salt
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • 1 tablespoon of parsley flakes

Directions

I usually chop up the ingredients as I go but with this dish, I was told from my Zia Antonella to prepare all the ingredients first so here we go. Make sure you wash all ingredients before using, that’ss what she told me, have to love it.

Take the sweet sausage and remove the skin from them and place the meat to the side, than peel the skin off the eggplant and cut it in half the long way and you want to dice up the eggplant to small dice pieces than place to the side, then you take the mushrooms and dice them up to small dice piece also and place to the side ,then in a deep dish you want to dice up the tomatoes, use a deep dish so when you dice it up you keep the juices that come out, it doesn’t have to be small dices, and place on the side, than take the medium onion and cut it in half and chop it to thin 1/4 moon shapes and place on the side, then take the garlic and chop to small pieces not minced though and place to side.

Than over a medium heat place the large deep skillet and place the oil, garlic and the onions and let them cook for 15 minutes but constantly mixing, this is why you need to prepare all ingredients you are going to be constantly mixing.

Than place the meat and the parsley in the pan and let it cook for ten minutes again just keep mixing and as you are mixing you are going to be breaking apart the chop meat to small pieces as it cooks.

Than you add the mushrooms to the pan and again you want to just keep mixing all the ingredients together for ten minutes and continue to break up the chop meat.

At this point you want to start boiling water for the penne pasta which on average takes 20 minutes to cook al dente between boiling water and cooking pasta, once the pasta is ready drain and place back in the pot and place to the side.

than to the pan with all the ingredients add the tomatoes, just keep mixing it for ten minutes, then add the salt, pepper and the wine and mix for ten minutes.

Than let it stand for five minutes, than place a Pasta Server Spoon full of the mix into the pot with the pasta, and mix, than in a bowl make a serving of the pasta, and add some of the mix on top of the pasta, and serve your traditional Penne Pasta With Sausage and Mushroom sauce and enjoy.

Convection vs Conventional vs Solo Microwave Oven

You know that there are several types of microwave ovens available in the market but there are mainly three types of microwaves available in today’s market – Convection, Conventional, and Solo Microwave Oven. These microwaves differ in the way they heat food and spread the heat throughout the oven. They are quite useful for reheating food and really easy to use which is why knowing about each type of microwave can help you in making the right choice.

Convection Microwave Oven

In a Convection microwave, the fan is situated at the back side which helps in heating the air inside the oven and then circulating it around the dish that is being cooked inside the oven. This type of microwave is quicker than a conventional or a solo microwave oven as it keeps on pushing the hot air around the food that is being cooked, making sure that all the exposed parts are heated properly.

It can use gas or electricity to work and a lot of cooks love using this oven to bake. Here are a few benefits of having a convection oven:

  1. You can cook your food in a relatively short period of time due to the fan which helps in circulating the hot air inside the oven.
  2. Your food is cooked evenly both from the inside and the outside and you don’t have to worry about any undercooked parts.
  3. It is versatile as you can use it to reheat your cold food items, bake dishes, make popcorns, and so on.
  4. It is quite simple and easy to use.

If you’d like to dig deeper into these then Kitchenguyd has a more indepth guide on the convection ovens.

Conventional Microwave Oven

One of the most common types of microwave oven which is used in everyday cooking tasks by majority of people. It is similar to a convection oven as it uses heat for cooking and can also use gas or electricity to run. However, in a conventional microwave oven, hot air is not circulated around with the help of a fan and the pots and pans inside the oven can often block the flow of hot air.

Here are a few advantages of using this type of oven:

  1. It has an inside capacity of 2-5 feet which allows you to cook a large amount of food at a time. You can also put cooking racks to cook multiple dishes.
  2. You can place it anywhere inside the kitchen as it is compact in size.
  3. It has a timer which helps you in cooking properly.

Solo Microwave Oven

One of the most basic microwave model which can perform only one function at a time. It includes magnetron which is responsible for production heat waves or micro waves and can be used both for normal cooking and heating food. It costs quite less than other oven types and cannot do other cooking tasks like grilling, baking, etc.

When you make the decision between these three types of ovens, you need to determine your cooking needs and requirements and then make the right choice.

How to choose the Perfect Kitchen Faucet Filter

We all know that a good and functional kitchen requires a handy kitchen faucet to complete your kitchen interiors. Similarly, a good kitchen faucet without an equally efficient faucet filter is utterly useless and hence, one should take proper care when choosing the perfect kitchen faucet filter for their faucet.

There are several types of Kitchen faucet filters that you can consider for your faucet depending on the space and position. The first thing to decide upon would be if you want a kitchen faucet filter to be installed with the faucet itself or place it below the sink.

While the former will be easier to install, the later will help you in saving a lot of space. Once you have decided on this, you will need to look at other factors to make the final choice.

Budget

The first thing to consider would be your budget for the kitchen faucet filter. Make sure you don’t blindly buy an expensive filter thinking that it would be a better choice because sometimes a budget-friendly model happens to work better than an expensive one.

Also, avoid buying the filter from websites and other third-party vendors to avoid these middle-men costs. A filter installed directly with the kitchen faucet will cost you around $100-$125 whereas a filter attached below the sink would cost you somewhere around $145-$170.

This is because the former filter tends to reduce the water flow whereas the filter that is placed below the sink will provide you with a good water pressure. So, make sure you check out all the features and technology and then go for a filter which cost you less.

Technology

The main purpose of using a filter is to ensure that no harmful substances enter your water stream and contaminate it which might lead to various diseases. So, to protect yourself from consuming wrong water, you need to install a filter which makes it important to choose a filter that comes with the appropriate technologies.

The most important things to check out in a filter is that it should include a carbon and sub-micron!  filtration with ion exchange and should also contain a multimedia block.

If your filter doesn’t contain all this, then it is basically useless for you and it might as well be that you weren’t using a kitchen filter at all.

Performance

One of the most important things to check is the performance sheet of the filter’s company and then make a choice. You will need to ensure that your filter only removes the carcinogens and other harmful substances and leaves the important minerals intact in the water.

If your filter ends up removing everything good and bad, then it is a wrong fit and you would need to buy another one for your kitchen faucet.

Remember that one is more likely to fall ill by the consumption of bad water so don’t neglect this and make sure you get the right filter for your faucet.

7 Difficulties every chef faces on a daily basis

While being a chef would seem like a glamorous and easy job to you, in reality, it is far away from it

A chef is responsible for all the food in a restaurant and if any single thing goes wrong with the food, he/she is the first person to be blamed for it all. Still, think being a chef is easy?

Here are a few reasons which will show you why being a chef is not as easy as you think.

Maintaining a relationship

If you have decided to become a chef, then let me tell you straight up that all your personal relationships are doomed. You won’t have time for your family or friends anymore, let alone dating someone new.

When you are a chef you are always working and you rarely get any days off so when would you even get time to hang out with your folks or friends?

Being chef is hard and probably the hardest part about it is giving up all personal relationships for your dream of becoming a chef.

No holidays

This might seem a little harsh but it is true, you won’t get holidays. If you are just starting, it is even less likely that you can take any leaves.

There is always going to be tons of work in the kitchen, vegetables to chop and dishes to prepare and well you can’t just go about and take a leave in the middle of that now, can you?

So if you have planned to become a chef, make sure you know that you won’t be going for a trip or taking a casual leave for a long time to come.

Becoming a celebrity chef is hard

We all have seen a lot of celebrity chefs on TV and we aspire to become just like them but it is not easy. Most likely you won’t end up on TV and would be working in a shabby restaurant but don’t let that discourage you.

You are still doing what you love right? Someday, you will make it big but maybe it is just not today.

No sick days

You can’t get sick too. Yes, you heard me right. This profession doesn’t have time for a chef who gets sick and so, you better make sure that you remain healthy at all times.

You won’t be provided with any sick leave and chances are if you really do turn up sick, you might need to start looking for another job after it.

It’s more than just cooking

If you had some misconception about handling the kitchen duties from day one and cooking dishes and all from the start then let me burst your bubble right there.

Initially, you would be given a lot of small-time jobs like chopping vegetables or slicing dishes, something small and inconsequential. Only after you build up trust and shown your competency will you be allowed anywhere near the actual cooking area.

Long working hours

I am being honest with you here, being a chef means working long hours. You might end up working 12 hours a day and every day you would be too tired to do anything else.

Basically, your personal life doesn’t exist and you will be always working during the other time. Sometimes you might end up working for more than 12 hours if you end up covering for someone else, so make sure you know what you are getting yourself into.

Sudden Health Department check-ups

The constant threat of the health department doing their surprise checkup is really worrisome. You never know what they might find to indiscriminate your restaurant and you and well if you are the reason for getting a restaurant shut, you can say goodbye to your career as a chef, for good.

Increase profits, avoid these restaurant startup mistakes

Are you planning to start your own Restaurant? Starting a new business is not easy and if you are not careful, you could make a lot of mistakes due to inexperience. Here are 5 of the most common startup mistakes which you need to avoid:

Avoid picking the second choice Location

One of the biggest mistakes which you can make when starting a new restaurant is giving up on your first choice of location for the second choice just to save a little money on the rent.

A successful restaurant is all about the perfect location and this should never be compromised on. If your restaurant is situated in a good location, only then you will be able to gain customers and be able to keep them.

Your second best location might attract customers too but if you really want to make your restaurant successful, don’t compromise on the location.

You’re starting low on cash

Another frequent mistake which most amateur entrepreneurs do is that they start with less amount of money and don’t keep a buffer amount with themselves.

When you start a business, you need to invest in a lot of stuff to make your business successful and same is the case with restaurants.

Initially, you won’t earn a lot of profit so it is important that you start with a sufficient amount of capital. You might need to make several investments to get the best quality equipment and accessories for your restaurant and that would require money.

So don’t let your restaurant go bankrupt in the first few days itself, start with an adequate amount of money.

Expecting too much too quickly

If you think that your restaurant will earn you thousands of bucks on the first night, then I am sad to tell you but you have been duped.

Building a successful restaurant takes time and patience and it might take more than a month for you to start earning a sufficient amount of profit to make a difference in your account balance. So don’t make the mistake of thinking your restaurant will shine overnight, be patient.

Trying to satisfy everyone

One of the worst things you can do when opening a new restaurant is trying to please every god damn person who walks into your restaurant. Understand that not every one might like your restaurant theme and be okay with those people leaving.

There would be hundreds of people who would prefer your restaurant’s theme and environment and you need to focus on keeping them happy. If you try to incorporate everyone’s taste into your restaurant, you are more likely going to end up with a disastrous place.

Focusing too much on your taste

You must have in mind for a long time that when you open your own restaurant, you would set up this section or you would incorporate a particular theme or food item which you like but if you want to make your restaurant successful, you would need to get rid of all these notions.

Your main priority is to keep your customers interested and happy and for that, you need to research what people like in a restaurant. Once you have extensively researched on people’s taste and preferences, add it to your own restaurant and you will end up with a successful restaurant in no time at all.
